నేను CION క్యాన్సర్ క్లినిక్స్, బంజారా హిల్స్‌లో సర్జికల్ ఆంకాలజిస్ట్‌గా పనిచేస్తాను. సర్జికల్ ఆంకాలజిస్ట్ అంటే క్యాన్సర్ ట్యూమర్లను ఆపరేషన్ ద్వారా తీసేసే వైద్యుడు. కానీ నా పని కత్తితో మొదలవదు, ప్రశ్నతో మొదలవుతుంది — ఈ ట్యూమర్‌ను తీసేయడం వల్ల ఈ వ్యక్తికి నిజంగా ప్రయోజనం ఉందా అని. I work as a surgical oncologist at CION Cancer Clinics in Banjara Hills. A surgical oncologist is the doctor who removes cancer tumours through an operation. But my work does not begin with a scalpel, it begins with a question, whether removing this tumour actually helps the person in front of me.

క్యాన్సర్ చికిత్సలో సర్జన్ ఒక్కడే ఉండడు. మందులు, రేడియేషన్ అవసరమైనప్పుడు నేను ఆ నిపుణులతో కలిసి మీ సంరక్షణను సమన్వయం చేస్తాను. నా బాధ్యత సర్జరీ, కానీ మొత్తం ప్రణాళికను దృష్టిలో ఉంచుకుని నిర్ణయం తీసుకుంటాను. A surgeon never works alone in cancer care. When medicines or radiation are needed, I coordinate with those specialists rather than treat surgery as the only answer. My responsibility is the operation, but I make the decision with the whole plan in view.

నేను MBBS, MS సర్జరీ రెండూ AIIMS, న్యూ ఢిల్లీలో చదివాను. అక్కడ ప్రతి నిర్ణయం గురించి ప్రశ్నలు అడుగుతారు, ప్రతి కేసును పెద్దవాళ్ళ ముందు సమర్థించుకోవాలి. ఆ క్రమశిక్షణ నాతోనే ఉండిపోయింది. క్యాన్సర్ సర్జరీలో ముఖ్యమైనది వేగం కాదు, తీర్పు. I trained at AIIMS, New Delhi, for both my MBBS and my MS Surgery. There you are questioned on every decision and you defend each case in front of seniors. That discipline stayed with me. In cancer surgery the thing that matters is not speed. It is judgment.

కొన్ని క్యాన్సర్లలో ఆపరేషన్ మొదటి అడుగు, కొన్నిసార్లు కాదు. కొన్ని ట్యూమర్లు కీమో లేదా రేడియేషన్ ముందు ఇస్తే మెరుగ్గా స్పందిస్తాయి, కొన్నింటికి సర్జరీ అసలు సరిపోదు. ఎప్పుడు కత్తి తీయాలి, ఎప్పుడు ఆగాలి అనేది నా పనిలో అతి ముఖ్యమైన భాగం. దాన్ని నేను మీకు నిజాయితీగా చెప్తాను. For some cancers the operation is the first step, and for others it is not. Some tumours respond better when chemotherapy or radiation comes first, and a few are not suited to surgery at all. Deciding when to cut and when to wait is the most important part of my work, and I will tell you that plainly.

I speak with the patient and family in plain words. I explain how much an operation will help, what its limits are, and what the risks are. Giving false hope is not fair to a patient. If anyone wants a second opinion, I welcome it.
